Kim Schur
As a retired Doctor of Audiology and former Regional Director of a local Deaf and Hard of Hearing non-profit in Florida, I have always been connected to the human experience in profound ways. Living with my husband and son, and surrounded by siblings and grandchildren, I am deeply rooted in family and community. My extended family now, are the wonderful artists I meet and work with. Art has been a constant in my life. When I retired, I sought a tactile way to express myself and serendipitously discovered pottery.
That fluke class seven years ago sparked a love that led me to local studios and Broward College, and ultimately to the welcoming environment of Gasper Arts Center. Working with clay has become my sanctuary, allowing my senses to awaken and my mind to find peace. Clay lets my and hands and mind collaborate, transforming my thoughts to tangible forms. While I began with throwing, I quickly transitioned to hand building, finding joy in allowing forms to guide my creative journey. My initial sculptures were deeply expressive, channeling inner emotions, before I moved on to intricate mask-making, which tested my patience and expanded my skills.
Today, I am in what I call my “silly” joyful period, creating whimsical cups, trinkets and small sculptures that simply make me smile. This playful phase may be my response to the world’s current chaos, but it is also a testament to finding joy in creation. Whatever the next chapter holds, I know it will bring me joy.
